"The nose serves to filter, humidify, and warm the air. However, this 'filter' must be clean to be effective! A congested nose indeed hinders a child from breathing freely and can adversely affect their sleep and nutrition.

Did you know? Children produce an average of one liter (4 cups) of nasal secretions per day, and even more when they suffer from a cold or respiratory allergies (pollen, dust, etc.). Since they cannot effectively blow their noses, it is not easy for them to manage these secretions. They need their parents to help them breathe better.

Regular nasal hygiene with a saline solution eliminates secretions and particles. It reduces congestion, moistens the nose, and prevents nosebleeds.

It also allows:

Better feeding and better sleep;
Reduction in colds or their duration;
Decrease in ear infections, sinusitis, and coughing;
Reduction in antibiotic intake;
Better control of asthma in children who suffer from it;
Decrease in children's absenteeism from daycare and school, as well as parents from work.
Start your child's nasal hygiene from birth.

Nasal hygiene should be done with a saline solution. This can be prepared at home or purchased at a pharmacy or grocery store. You will find a homemade preparation recipe on the back of the packaging.

The syringe irrigation technique is recommended for children under 2 years old. When they are older, the bottle or spray irrigation technique is recommended. Here are the suggested amounts of saline solution based on your child's age. If your doctor has mentioned a different quantity, follow their advice.

Preemie: 1 ml per nostril

Under 2 years old: 1 to 3 ml per nostril

Minimum recommended frequency for your child:

October to May: 1 to 2 times a day

Cold or congestion: 3 to 6 times a day

Lying down technique - for children under 6 months

Always wash your hands BEFORE and AFTER performing nasal hygiene on your child.
Remove abundant secretions using a nasal aspirator if needed.
Fill a syringe with saline water at body temperature (see the table above for the quantity).
Lay your child on their side or back, swaddle if necessary, and place a washcloth under their nose. Irrigate the upper nostril when positioned on the side by gently emptying the syringe's contents, about 1 mL per second. Secretions may come out through both nostrils, the mouth, or be swallowed. It is not necessary for the water to come out through the other nostril.
Turn your child to the other side or keep them on their back, and repeat the same technique for the other nostril.
If your child is unable to blow their nose, wipe their nose with a tissue or use a nasal aspirator. If there are still secretions, repeat steps 2 to 5.
Sitting up technique for children over 6 months

Single-person technique

Your child should be sitting on your lap, with their head straight (not tilted backward or forward). To do this, it may be easier to swaddle your child in a large towel. You can also place a towel over them to prevent them from getting wet.

With one hand, hold their jaw to stabilize them and press your cheek against theirs so that they cannot move during the exercise.

With the other hand, hold the syringe. Insert the tip into one nostril. Lean slightly forward.

Empty the contents of the syringe quickly into the nostril. Secretions may come out through both nostrils or the mouth.

Use the same technique for the other nostril.

If your child is unable to blow their nose, wipe their nose with a tissue. If necessary, repeat steps 2, 3, and 4. Your child should have a clean nose with a good airflow.

Two-person technique

Your child should sit on the lap of the person helping you, with their head straight (not tilted backward or forward), and their back well supported against the helper's stomach. The helper can hold your child's legs between their own. One hand is used to hold your child's arms. The other hand rests on their forehead to prevent their head from moving.

With one hand, place a washcloth under your child's nose. With the other hand, hold the syringe. Insert the tip into one nostril. Ask the person assisting you to lean slightly forward.

Empty the contents of the syringe into the nostril. Secretions may come out through both nostrils or the mouth.

Use the same technique for the other nostril.

If your child is unable to blow their nose, wipe their nose with a tissue. If necessary, repeat steps 2 and 3. Your child should have a clean nose with a good airflow.
